Toolkit Animation- Show Reel

Here is a selection of my drawn animations. The only one missing is the final character animation; entailing a walk cycle and character interaction with a prop, its currently a working progress but it will be uploaded as soon as it is done. But for now you can enjoy the complete work so far!

CG Artists Toolkit- (Deformers)

Here we have some simple animated deformers. These are going to prove hugely helpful for simple clean deformations, such as the squash and stretch I used a short time ago in one of my pre-viz samples.

Now that the app idea is fairly solid in my head I have devised a script detailing the gestures used to interact with the cell and the organelles.

Project 4: The Fantastic Voyage- (Revised Rough Storyboard)

The Fantastic Voyage project has taken a turn down the app route for me. During the pitch I was informed by a panel of guests and tutors that my animatic had the potential to become an interactive learning tool. Taking this route, the resulting animation I will have to create will essentially be a demo of how the app would work, were I approaching a company that creates them.

I have sketched out another rough storyboard entailing some of the gestures used with tablets and touch screen phones. The animation being limited to only two minutes has led me to believe that I would only be able to focus on a few of the organelles in a cell. So the story below only focuses upon three- The Mitochondria, the Nucleus and the Golgi Body (Apparatus)

Project 4: The Fantastic Voyage- (Pre-Viz Progress1)

I'm working on the animation with camera angles now. I have left a few gaps where there might be some interactions, for example tapping the discs to open them and double tapping to zoom into the cell.

Here is the first introduction I have attempted. The next part however involved a transition between camera's as the crane shot was not going to help in zooming in following the opening of the discs.

Unfortunately I couldn't line up the camera's so there is a slightly dodgy transition between the first clip and the second.

Toolkit Animation- Speed-animation

Inspired by the speedpainting challenges the other week, below are a pair of animations that are inspired by certain smells. They were supposed to be as sponataneous as possible any materials we wanted, including paints, post it notes, pencils and so on. I chose to try and illustrate the insense stick using a flower petal and also the lemon smells using a yellow post it note

Project 4: The Fantastic Voyage- (Beginning Pre-Viz)

This is only the beginning of Pre-Viz. I was working out how the cell might pop into existence from between the discs I designed previously. The cell appears as though it has been held squashed between the two halves of the discs and jiggles into a full 3D existence before revolving. For now I have an example of the pair together, however I have two extra videos displaying the two pieces working individually. Hopefully I might get an oppertunity tomorrow to render the same scenes out and try overlaying some text boxes in After-Effects.

CG Artists Toolkit- (Fur Presets, Santa Hat and Tail)

Its taken me a while to get around to these but over the past two days I've finally managed to get up to date with Maya tutorials, below are some of the fur tests from the Fur Presets and Attributes tutorial.

Here is the Santa hat, completed immediately after the initial fur presets tutorial. The fluffy covering was a mix of the 'Polar Bear' fur preset for the white brim and pompom and I think 'Bear' for the main hat. It does seem petty authentic!

Finally here we have the rigging of a tail.

Project 4: The Fantastic Voyage- (Post-Pitch)

Pitch completed, and my animation idea is taking a new direction. It was suggested to me that my design and game theme could become an app. Looking back at my animation it appears to be the bestt way to save it from the thoroughly boring linear text book thing I had going. Grabbing the idea with both hands I've tried to kick start some reseach. A good way to start would be to look into the gestures you find on various devices for example the iPad below.

There are a multitude of gestures I could use within the interface design of my animation to navigate a Eukaryotic cell at leisure.

Other inspirational influences come from various films I was pointed towards. A key one being 'Minority Report', then another sup'd up version would be the depiction of Jarvis and all the other CG wonders used in the 'Iron Man' movies. The full-body swipe actions used in the minority report could be synonymous with the idea that an app of my animation could be used on a large interactive whiteboard and such like.

Now the plan is to create a few Pre-Viz samples to try and test various camera movements within a space, and also provide me with the oppertunity to test out applying some layers using Adobe After Effects.

I have finally got to experimenting with sound. I knew I wanted a technological feel to pair up with the graphics. I now have several versions of animatic. The first is one consisting of only sound effects. The second is a combination of sound effects and airplane cabin ambience. The third is one sporting a soundtrack, of sorts. I must admit I'm not a huge fan and I'm quite happy to experiment further and create a whole new one. But I do still need to source a voice over to summarize some of the text featuring in my animatic. So the sound may change again completely by the end of the week!

Project 4: The Fantastic Voyage- (Rough Storyboard)

I suddenly realized I had this and hadn't uploaded it, so here is, the rough storyboard I created. It differs slightly from the silent cinematic I posted up yesterday, a few transitions are different and there is a little more movement in the main cell display.

There is still a way to go on presentation; motion of the various elements and the presentation of the text. But that will hopefully be highlighted when subsequent development animation(s) are created. With any luck by next friday I will have created a Pre-Viz and added some of the effects I'm looking for with Adobe After Effects-  just to give a feel of 'the vision' I am going for. Anyway thats enough babbling from me- I'll just be getting on with it!

This is the raw version of my animatic, obviously it still needs sound. I am thinking a kind of techy ambience; beeps, whooshes, zips and crackling noise.
Unfortunately a few directional arrows are missing- the key one indicating the organelles and the main cell are permanently rotating at a lethargic pace...

Project 4: The Fantastic Voyage- (Thumbnails- Transition)

I have a vision of sorts for how the structure of my Eukaryotic cell could take place. I have tried to illustrate it in the short sequence below. Beginning with the main cell body in the centre of the page, a particular organelle is selected and flies freely away from the cell body, flying through the 3D space and around to a text box located fairly close by. Here I would utilize some of those Pre-Viz camera swings, like a pitch shot etc.

Once alongside the next text box, the organelle would also revolve like the cell body and various aspects such as labels could appear to pinpoint various elements. And the text to accompany this organelle would flicker into the text box. Somewhere in the background the original cell body can still be seen suspended.

So I began to juggle with the layout of the new and improved text box(es) and shifting base elements around, adjusting gradients and opacity levels here and there. A few hue, saturation and lightness changes in the colour schemes and we have the selection below.
I'm quite partial to the RED layout, although I prefer the BLUE and TEXT colour schemes. Or perhaps a mix of the RED and TEXT layouts... 




I mentionned in a previous post I was going to do an experiment on the block text, well here we have it. I found a number of easy to read typefaces with a slight tech edge to a couple of them. Forgive the multiples. Seeing as the information is going to be fairly dense text, I though it would be a good idea to see how it looked in a sentence. As I've discovered the typefaces all have slightly different spacing... As a result I don't think I'll pick Corbel. It looks far too condensed...

Desperately tying to find the look here and I find I am struggling, but I will not give up!

The first image is an idea for introducing the cell. These white wire discs split open and reveal the cell in a revolve on the screen. This cell is just for the purposes of this example I have yet to finalize designs for it. (Its also the part I am struggling most with.)

Below is the latest layout design I have been working on. Using one of the text box designs from an earlier thumbnailing session. I believe it is now one of the weakest parts of the image and should match the striated themes down the edges of the page, or maybe the vague honeycomb pattern in the background. Either way some progress is being made. I hope to have a whole sheet of layouts for comparison using similar base elements as this design.

Here are some experiments with colour but also a little contrast and saturation using the above layout. Again I have a habit of saturating things too much, to the point it looks like it belongs on a kids TV show. I'm not sure if I have a particular preference for any colour. Feedback on any ideas would be appreciated.

Below are some experiments with tech-like typefaces. These would most likely be used for the titles of each cell organelle and a different set of typefaces for the block text for ease of reading. Those should be finalized shortly I should think. (Most of these, if not all, were downloaded from Dafont.com) Let me know which titles you think work best on the background.

CG Artists Toolkit- (Can Exchange, Biped Rigging- arms)

Her is the result of the quick can exchange tutorial. Its nice to finally understand how to link objects together in such a way as this drinks can. I can see how locators will prove very useful.

Below is the result of a lot of hard work. Having Alan introduce the mirroring of a limb there was a moment of celebration but it was short lived. There was there were all of the minimum and maximum values to add to things such as the fingers. Three joints to each finger, eight fingers to each hand and then a few more for the thumbs. This was a long tutorial but its worth it to see the hand grasp as it should. And the arms not bending freakishly out of their way. This biped is shaping up now.

Well I have been trying to work on my idea's. Initially I tried to start with a layout of the screen when viewing the animation. A data window would be on the left hand side with scrolling information and the cell under a spotlight on the right, revolving at an even pace. I feel I made these colours far too bright and naive for a first try and the layout just doesn't seem teen friendly. It feels like it should be on the Cbeebies channel in retrospect, but there's time for improvement.

Unhappy with the earlier attempts at the layout, I tried to find a way to jazz up the text box containing the information on the cell and organelles. I would like there to be an element of transparency to the box. In the most case it is 50% grey. However for a gradient effect I have also made parts of some of these boxes more opaque.

Here is my biggest struggle of all. How my Eukaryotic cell should look. Searching up images of the cells threw up a variety of types in many colours due to the fact scientists stain them for various experiments. They mostly semi transparent, revealing the nucleus.
In my experiments below, I looked at the possibility of having a cell that is opaque or slightly transparent. And another feature would be whether or not to make the cell a character, adding eyes and expressions, or leaving it as simply a cell. At the moment I am completely at a loss as to what would suit my idea better, bearing in mind this is for A-level students

Finally here was an idea that came to mind, when focusing on particular organelles within the cell. The key frames of the visuals are sketched out below.

 Also instead of having the organelle fly out of the cell as depicted in 'stage4', it would be just as easy to have a camera zoom in to the cell for closer inspection in Maya.

Having completed a fair amount of research into my target areas of gaming loadout/character screens and cell biology I put together the influence maps below.

My key focus now is on the structure of a Eukaryotic cell, using a character turn around and similar data as the character bio's or loadout screens in games,

CG Artists Toolkit- (Rim Lights and Transparency)

In this Maya Tutorial we learned how to fake rim lights to try and give the character a better lit and 3 dimensional look to him. I'm fairly pleased with the result and also interested in the scattering used to create a better skin tone on the character. I had always wondered how the translucency was achieved.

Below is the final render with transparent materials. When completing this tutorial I was impressed with how well the transparent layers worked.  I can understand why some advertising companies turn to have their products depicted in CG there is a great degree of control to be had over the lighting of such objects.

So I got started on creating my clown character and his walk and subsequent interaction with a prop, his lasso. Below is the video of the keyframes. To try and get some pacing in there I simply duplicated a few frames which is why there are a few elements of lifelessness in the animation. To complete this animation I'm going to have to draw a lot of inbetween's and also to try and create a 'boil' with any still images (retracing the same image a few times) Please excuse the washing out towards the end, I changed pencils without realizing and used a paler one by mistake...
