Snivel is now complete! Sadly the Adobe Flash endeavour (for the mouth animation) didn't pan out for this particular Gif. I definitely need more practise to understand how Flash works (and tweening.) So perhaps another entirely Flash based project is in my future...<br />
<br />
Snivel's mouth was animated within AE for the final version. Its not perfect, but its not too bad. I'm quite pleased with this little Gif- But future ones will definitely be simplified!eclarksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14109656778873436497noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2403223154281092605.post-54970517427797172372018-04-10T01:31:00.000-07:002018-04-10T01:31:27.048-07:00 Gif Practise- 'Snivel'- Animation (Work in Progress)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The weather for Snivels animation is pretty much complete now. I spent quite a long time applying a droplet effect throughout the composition(s.) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The splash animation was created using a general splash shape made in Illustrator. Once in After Effects, I moved the anchor point to the base of the tiny pool, then I was able to keyframe the scale, feigning an upward motion. The secondary droplet was created with another animated stroke, set to move a beat after the main splash. And in the same fashion as the rain strokes, I made the layer a Stencil alpha over my Ran Gradient, to give the droplets the same colour.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsMafSWYdsUxqCdn8We7usgMlpaiFOD4GH8GRUtfBaIRnQyFOjYvRb1r08iwwZb2KaExe6UwXlGmkSpJR2dbvmu1OMpvsTWrYKsE6CbJFk3CbLjUuolOOjQW4ZDf6tybwiTtrec6UltT4/s1600/Droplet_Alpha.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="304" data-original-width="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsMafSWYdsUxqCdn8We7usgMlpaiFOD4GH8GRUtfBaIRnQyFOjYvRb1r08iwwZb2KaExe6UwXlGmkSpJR2dbvmu1OMpvsTWrYKsE6CbJFk3CbLjUuolOOjQW4ZDf6tybwiTtrec6UltT4/s1600/Droplet_Alpha.gif" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Droplet gif</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
With that general splash made, I then had to go back through my three separate raining compositions and match up the splashes to where the rain strokes 'impacted' with the floor. (Needless to say this took a while, but was totally worth it!)<br />
<br />
I used the same techniques, albeit slightly adjusted, to create the different splash effects on Snivels head, shoulder and Umbrella. It was made more complicated by having moving objects. The head and arm were simple enough, I just 'parent pick whip[ed]' the splash compositions to the moving objects.<br />
The umbrella stuff however took a bit more problem solving (and composition hopping)!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3bslPUfzRox7kb0UeH-T4tpKUZfECqnbd8SlG6LqGeGmVR7h4wXyZdVADGgBE8yQf-BQa1eZdS_5p62Vi50um3TBrtrNLD4O_8LVWZgJWexLSxPL49875E3Kw4_5EX57eAyw2EbxkSjg/s1600/Snivel_Droplets.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1065" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3bslPUfzRox7kb0UeH-T4tpKUZfECqnbd8SlG6LqGeGmVR7h4wXyZdVADGgBE8yQf-BQa1eZdS_5p62Vi50um3TBrtrNLD4O_8LVWZgJWexLSxPL49875E3Kw4_5EX57eAyw2EbxkSjg/s640/Snivel_Droplets.gif" width="630" /></a></div>
<br />
The last bit in need of tweaking is Snivel's mouth- I want to make it a more expressive and fluid feature. After doing some research into some of my favourite 2D animations on the internet, I was able to glean that the animators behind them did a lot of program hopping to create their final piece. Using programs such as Clip Studio Paint, After Effects and Flash. The mouth animations were often completed using Adobe Flash- Apparently its one of the best for animating with audio on the timeline. (Not that I need it for audio.)<br />
<br />
SO! My next port of call is to teach myself some Flash animation! I will catch up soon with my progress!eclarksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14109656778873436497noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2403223154281092605.post-68144232188696885432018-03-30T04:22:00.000-07:002018-03-30T04:22:01.624-07:00Gif Practise- 'Snivel'- Character Prep and Animation (Work in Progress)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Taking his original illustrator file, I've duplicated Snivel and divided the illustration into moveable pieces. The exploded view below should give you a good idea of how I can now puppet him.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: left;">The only unknown element is how I'm going to make mouth expressions work. I'd like an elasticity; to be able to smoothly transition from one shape to another. But this is something I will have to research and work on. Meanwhile the other pieces appear to work well!</span><br /><span style="text-align: left;"> </span><br />

<br />Taking Snivel into After Effects was fun if a little challenging. I hadn't really fully formed a plan yet. But I did successfully add movement to most of the body.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The snotty nose was achieved with a mixture of general animation (of independent features like the nostrils), motion path (For the drip) and the Pin tool (for some additional stretchy deformation.)</div>

All body movement was created as you'd expect, adding pivots points in joints and quite literally puppeteering the rig.The facial stuff was created using a series of animated mask shapes (with the preset 'stencil alpha') before pre-comping the layers. This was to make the eyes blink and hide the excess eyeball behind the brow shapes and hair.</div>

<br />
<div>
Finally, the most challenging bit- the rain. I have had experience in animating strokes before in AE and that was how I wanted to make the rain work. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I made a white 'solid' and drew some strokes with the 'pen tool', (creating a series of 'mask's on the white solid.) With the 'Mask' selected, I went to the 'Effects' drop down menu- Clicked 'Generate' and then 'Stroke.' Using that menu, I key-framed the stroke's start and end points creating the spitting black and white rain. The rain colour was achieved by placing the black and white composition on top of a blue grey coloured square, and using the 'stencil alpha' preset to cut out the shapes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was a process I had to repeat a fair bit; firstly to make it loop, but then to also increase the density of the rain and finally to layer them up so there was rain in front and behind Snivel.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
The only elements left to do now are mouth movements and splashes. To really hammer home the miserable weather, I wanted to have splashes bouncing off Snivels head, shoulder and umbrella and potentially the floor. As yet I need to work out what kind of stylised shape that might take. And how to animate it. I suspect more masks and a sort of radial bloom... We shall see.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
NEW LESSON LEARNED</h4>
<div>
<b>Gifs can only be exported at certain fps within Adobe Media encoder. </b>After animating Snivel at 24fps, I discovered Gifs would only export at a select range of frames. The closest I could get was 25fps. Trying to retro-fit by changing all the compositions in my AE file to 25fps affected certain elements of the animation. (Such as the nose pin tool deformations. And the rain!) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've reverted to having the animation at 24fps, but rendering out the gif at 25fps. So any glitchy-ness seen is probably related to the frame speed. You live and learn!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In any case enjoy the WIP. I'll post another version with splashes soon! Stay tuned!</div>

A little while ago, I rediscovered a looping animation with graphical drip feature l'd made for a commission. I'd forgotten I had done it- but it played on my mind for a while and I decided I wanted to revisit it in a different context. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju10lT7xshCN7ELWpqXLmBuf63E1xs5bfb0BidXopVDQ2uepawLse_TMv_4-6uZPXrRasPuBebNB_NNa4xNgCjB4c4VZvwJcdn9QX0eGBRAYXAe2dXj2kt-h9cOr4K5CzgVxAvjM0gwcs/s1600/17+Snivel+scan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1560" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju10lT7xshCN7ELWpqXLmBuf63E1xs5bfb0BidXopVDQ2uepawLse_TMv_4-6uZPXrRasPuBebNB_NNa4xNgCjB4c4VZvwJcdn9QX0eGBRAYXAe2dXj2kt-h9cOr4K5CzgVxAvjM0gwcs/s320/17+Snivel+scan.jpg" width="312" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Snivel- Pen and pencil sketch</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />With my keyword 'drip' I eventually came up with this miserable character I like to call 'Snivel'</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He embodies that feeling we all have when the weather is crap, you're soaked, (despite your best efforts to weather-proof), you're probably suffering a cold and you still have a long commute ahead.</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Snivel- Recreated in Adobe Illustrator</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /><div>
The image above is the sort of vibe I'm heading for. I want to take the base elements of the vectored version of Snivel and adapt him so he's animation ready- creating a small folder of mouth shapes, separating moving elements and designing splash shapes, so that we can see the drips hitting his head, coat and the floor. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm not hugely practised with using Adobe Illustrator, so this was a good exercise that I hope to expand on some more. Particularly when colouring/ texturing things in the program.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The duration of the gif will be Snivel getting drenched- water bouncing off him and the umbrella, while blinking slowly. An ugly glob of snot runs down his nose, he then sniffles, slightly shuffling his grip on the umbrella, before returning us to the beginning of the animation.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Keep your eyes peeled for the next post when I'll have hopefully gotten him moving!</div>

THE BEGINNING</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">In October of 2016 I was contacted by Phil Gomm- CAA course leader at the University for the CreativeArts- Rochester, to see if I could help out with a '<i>biggish job</i>' based in production design as part of 'The Geek Boutique'. </span></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">The job was the YPGTTO- The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, a piece of classical music composed by Benjamin Britten. The project, in collaboration with ONE- A network of European Orchestras, was to create an animation to help inspire (very) young people into exploring classical music and their instruments. The final </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">animation</span><span style="font-weight: normal;"> would then tour Europe, playing alongside live orchestra's in six different European countries: Bulgaria, France, Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.</span></h4>
<div>
Phil came to the realisation the visuals for such an animation should be a literal Kingdom of sound and there should be a little character to experience it. Thus the Kingdom of Sound was devised and split into fourteen Districts, representing all the instruments you would find in an orchestra. And a musical-note inspired character, called Red was made to explore it all!</div>
<div>
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
THE BRIEF</h4>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I was challenged to design the assets and general environment of each district, using the classical instruments themselves, crossed over with a flat, bold, animation style from the fifties and sixties. We took particular inspiration from the animation studio 'United Productions of America' (UPA) and their 1951 cartoon 'Rooty-Toot-Toot.' But we were inspired by many illustrations of a similar nature. Including 'the Pink Panther' cartoons (1963) and the illustrative works of Mary Blair.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
PRE-PRODUCTION</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Once in possession of the script, I got stuck in designing the Horn District. My references comprised of google searches of the instruments and the aforementioned style guide. However, the first snag I hit was devising the colour palette. The script had detailed various districts being seen at different times of day. My solution was to colour pick from images of the instruments and my own collection of photographs of the sky at various times of day; to create the mood of each district.</span></h4>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyKWsdK5C5dpM8C6McHslgVhd4RzK39t8YBLbs3bZeCRP7mJSf1HNhhdWwtu1Frzrsd6KGjbE0lvjvp1AC4WEygQ41ijh03B03GZHEYM8Ye0qvVjDeClhNFyLtbB5FJFnbSlzesn7lido/s1600/Horn+District+Staircases.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyKWsdK5C5dpM8C6McHslgVhd4RzK39t8YBLbs3bZeCRP7mJSf1HNhhdWwtu1Frzrsd6KGjbE0lvjvp1AC4WEygQ41ijh03B03GZHEYM8Ye0qvVjDeClhNFyLtbB5FJFnbSlzesn7lido/s640/Horn+District+Staircases.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There were only occasional scenes where this method didn't work so well. Such as the subterranean Cello District and the cavernous Double-Bass District. In the case of the Cello District, I used some aquarium photographs and online references to create a deep sea vibe. While the Double Bass District was inspired by literal cave systems gleaned from photos and online references. Below is a document with a few of the asset concepts from each district I designed.<br />
<br />
<div class="issuuembed" data-configid="33055300/59600229" style="height: 500px; width: 100%;">
</div>
<script async="true" src="//e.issuu.com/embed.js" type="text/javascript"></script><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
I would sometimes try to picture the entire scene as opposed to just pieces or assets of each district, resulting in the environmental concept art below.<br />

<h4 style="text-align: center;">
ANIMATION</h4>
<div style="text-align: left;">
At this point I thought my contribution to RKoS was over, but I was given one more job to do. <b>Animation</b>! I was drafted in to animate Red running his way through the Percussion District. Chapter 14.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
44 Shots. Fast paced action. Interaction with the environment. And set adjustments or entire rebuilds with almost every shot. It was a whirlwind but so much fun! I managed to animate all but the conveyor belt scene. That particularly action packed sequence (The conveyor) was the combined handy work of fellow alumni Nat Urwin and Ethan Shilling.</div>
<br />
<iframe allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="500" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4Hjiu3k_uKQ?ecver=1" width="1600"></iframe><br />
<br />
<iframe allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="500" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tby7YcvD-xw?ecver=1" width="1600"></iframe><br />
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went on to animate a few more shots in the final district- Chapter 15, the Kingdom of Sound. The middle chunk of animation also involved crowds which was a new experience!! (It was the only time I completely crashed my PC!) </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was during this segment I was given the challenge to animate six characters in one shot (on top of the crowds) as Red, the King and his entourage of four servants were all rushing about in one scene; all the while there were crowds amassing behind them!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<iframe allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="500" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/U5Kl4e20u-0?ecver=1" width="1600"></iframe></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Upon completing the shots, I passed them onto fellow colleagues for rendering and compositing before awaiting the films final edit and premier. (Many thanks to Deanna Crisbacher and Ethan Shilling for their tireless efforts on that front!)</div>

THE PREMIER- AMIENS AND ABBEVILLE- FRANCE</h4>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In November 2017 I was lucky enough to be invited along with a handful of team-mates to Amiens to see 'Red and the Kingdom of Sound' being played live to an auditorium <b>full</b> of French school children, not once, but three times. It was a sight to behold, but also to be heard. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After months of hearing a recorded version of Britten's music, the live orchestra- 'L'Orchestre de Picardie', highlighted notes I never remembered hearing before. And their sound would change again from location to location. It was a wonderful experience in the flesh. And it was a pleasure to see young faces enjoying what we had helped to produce.</div>

A week after our return to the UK we collaborated once more on the film- Setting out to fix all our little niggles with it; ready for its next major showing at the Lyon Biennial in France in Mach 2018. I re-animated the shots, delving into a handful of chapters across the film, before finally coming around to the credits sequence.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Much like our favourite animated movies; we decided to add some bonus material to the credits. Taking on the idea of scrolling text, we played with the idea of Red and Yellow skydiving past, with the King and Queen making their own brief appearance. It was a lot of fun to animate this freely, (as this wasn't scripted at all) and it neatly wrapped up 'Red and the Kingdom of Sound' in multiple languages! (The film credits even feature on <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7918380/">IMDb</a>!)</div>

Though sadly I can't post the final film yet, I hope to one day be able to. Fingers crossed there may be an English orchestra who will play alongside our animation, and that all the children who have seen (and will see it), have an ignited passion for classical music (and animation of course!)</div>

I started doodling in a sketchbook quite some months ago. Initially I just filled a few spreads with odds and ends of mixed media-Tissue paper, left over paint, scraps of papers, stamp sets and the like- As a way of being creative without committing to trying to make something perfect. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The results were some interesting textured backgrounds I could work back into and complete later- leading me to label this sketchbook 'The Book of Mish-Mash.' This book has some observational drawings, studies from photos and online references and just purely imaginative drawings. </div>

About a month ago the Royal Academy live streamed a Life drawing session, live on facebook. I missed the main event but found I was able to catch up more recently and give it a shot. (It can be found on youtube <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHbFyW279ME">here</a>)<br />
<div>
I didn't complete the full hour and a half class. Which means I can come back and enjoy the remainder at a later date and create some more drawings. Here are the first few poses. These were meant to be the quick sketches (3 mins) but I paused and modelled into them a little more.<br />

I really want to create a noir version! I re-imagined the original character design into something suitably more 1930's Private investigator in light of the magnifying glass- then worked further into the concept.</div>

WHAT IF... this character is looking for INSPIRATION!?</h3>
<div>
I looked up the top ways to find creative inspiration. I took the pointers from this research and skewed them into the world of this PI character so that he embodies each of these activities that can help overcome a creative block. In the world of the PI, I feel 'Inspiration' will manifest itself as a missing woman.<br />
<br />
Below are the list of a few of the things to tackle creative block, followed by my corresponding ideas for story.<br />
<br />
<i>1. Think- Listen to your thoughts, write them down, work on them...</i><br />
A PI could easily be sat at a desk with a notepad and pen. Case files strewn everywhere. Perhaps a decanter of whisky in reach and an ashtray full of cigarettes....<br />
<br />
<i>2. Memories- Remember your past. Look at old photo albums and talk to relatives about any anecdotes they might remember.</i><br />
The PI sits, sifting through photographs, evidence. Using that magnifying glass to try to identify Inspiration.<br />
<br />
<i>3. Interact, Travel, Get involved- Be sure to talk to people and be active. This way ideas will flow. more easily.</i><br />
A PI might conduct door to door enquiries, investigate places where the Inspiration was last seen.<br />
<br />
<i>4. Note your emotions- Note down exactly what is going through your mind and how you view life.</i><br />
PI narrates over the top of everything, his suspicions, his every thought on where Inspiration could be.<br />
<br />
<i>5. Start- Don't just sit there waiting for inspiration to arrive. it probably won't, at least not for a long time. Force yourself to begin. </i><br />
The PI stares at his office door willing her to walk through it. He stands and goes out searching for himself.<br />
<br />
I like the concept that upon finding 'Inspiration' the PI's world dissolves to reveal something more familiar to animators. A regular guy sitting at his computer suddenly having a lightbulb moment and getting to work. Meanwhile on his pin-board are all of the pointers as to how to find inspiration.<br />
<br />
I'll be doing storyboard frames soon, but initially illustrating concepts of those key scenes from the creative inspiration pointers. See below.<br />

A few months ago I was invited to take part in a collaborative project alongside other UCA Computer Animation Arts alumni to create animations with artists based in Kenya!<br />
<br />
UCA and MASK (The Mobile Arts School Kenya) teamed up to animate award wining artworks by MASK students. Over 2 months each alumni worked with their respective artists to realise their artworks as one and a half minute looping animations.<br />
<br />
I was partnered up with the lovely Churchill Ongere and his artwork entitled 'Greener Pastures and the Colours of Youth.' I really enjoyed collaborating (rather more extensively through WhatsApp) making sure I stayed as true to the soul of Churchill's piece as possible.<br />
<br />
His collage revolved around themes of growing up- Young people figuring themselves out and where they want to be in the world. Constantly changing, a little awkward at times, but full of passion and colour.<br />

Upon completion of the project our work went on display in a few places. This weekend just gone I took a trip to Margate to see the exhibition at the Turner Contemporary!<br />

Having completed 'Thinking Outside the Box', I'm diving straight into another of the stack of storyboards Bob gave me. This one was simply titled 'Looking'. I've made a Gif of the majority of the storyboard that I have. But it was a little jumbled with a few strands of additional ideas. The below is a compilation of the largest chunks.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj94AXtP8EeyhItBZ_bjf9r42hcyTbPkdX8p9DHgIDPGkAIlTCQfV9R64NULce-O2t5CO6ITdYVyMqI3x_tWzzoqi-eXpCxVE2L-khQ1sxF1JRmdBobt-_y0KE8cQYHlsoGnWDw4OD15Os/s1600/Looking-Storyboard.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj94AXtP8EeyhItBZ_bjf9r42hcyTbPkdX8p9DHgIDPGkAIlTCQfV9R64NULce-O2t5CO6ITdYVyMqI3x_tWzzoqi-eXpCxVE2L-khQ1sxF1JRmdBobt-_y0KE8cQYHlsoGnWDw4OD15Os/s320/Looking-Storyboard.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
What with the way the character walks into the foreground and away again I feel this animation lends itself to 3D. And seeing as the narrative here is a little ambiguous, I fancy playing around with the concept of looking. What is the character looking for? What kind of scene should I set?<br />
<br />
Initially I felt that retaining the big empty white space might be the way to go. So that there is no right or wrong way up and the character could wander in from all angles. Close up, far away, side to side, top to bottom. Perhaps camera views from above and below. I feel like referencing the kids TV show Pocoyo again. Using only faint shadows to indicate the floor for the character.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
A second scenario that came to mind was a film noire environment. Channeling the super sleuth of the 1920's and 30's. A little like Humphrey Bogart in '<i>The Maltese Falcon</i>.' Following that train of thought I was reminded of a game released a while ago called '<i>White Night</i>' which took an entirely black and white approach. The game is set in 1938 and part of the story and its mechanics are based in light.<br />

<span style="text-align: start;">I feel drawn to trying out something very similar to white night. Exploring abstract spaces entirely by lighting, perhaps creating a variety of gobos and such while the character wanders about searching for something with his little magnifying glass. I'll do some photoshop concepts to see which I feel works best. Then again, I may entertain both versions and create two animations!</span></div>

More recently I have been able to get into recreating one of these storyboards using a mix of Adobe Illustrator and After Effects.<br />
<br />
The original mastermind of these storyboarded ideas is a man by the name of Bob Bryan. (Who I hope will enjoy my rendition of his ideas!) I hope to realise at least handful of the stack of ideas and create a little series of them which I will entitle 'The Bob Animations.'<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
While recreating the above animation originally entitled 'Stretch' in illustrator, I began to play with colour using an online resource called <a href="http://paletton.com/#uid=1000u0kllllaFw0g0qFqFg0w0aF">Paletton</a>. (Colour is something I feel I need to practise with.) The initial colour palette was not really ideal and reminds me somewhat of 'Starburst' sweets. But the second was much better.</div>

I dubbed it 'my Little Adventure Book' and initially didn't think anything I put in it was blog worthy. It was just for myself. I have since changed my mind. Only now have I had the time to go back and continue documenting that trip in a mixture of journalling, photographs and general mixed media. So I thought I'd start blogging some of the journal as I go along.<br />
<br />
I hope to fill this entire book with mixed media journalling of a whole host of my excursions filled with the paraphernalia that comes with any outing. Tickets and passes, all manner of photography, good and bad, in-jokes and little novelties. My challenge to myself is to draw a lot more. whether it is a cartoon doodle, sketch from life, from photographs and also on location. <br />
<br />
I'd lost the spark for drawing for some time, but I think I have just found it again!<br />
